Point Pleasant

Yesterday, we had a little family roadtrip to the Jersey Shore. Point Pleasant was quite pleasant even on a cold day in February. The girls tossed seashells into the water, we hung out on the boardwalk and visited a little aquarium. It was a good day. And the girls have now been from edge to edge of our country. (from sea to shinning sea, not bad for only 2).

Elsa and her dad. Elsa was especially delighted by the ocean. She told me that we couldn't go home. She wanted to stay all day.

Shine down on me

Yesterday, we had a beautiful sunny warm day. After being in the deep freeze for over a month, we really appreciated a 50 degree day. The girls were finally able to get out and play. Yay for being outside on sunny days.

Lily with hair all a-glow pushing her trike around the courtyard. Lily's been doing better at night. She seems more content to sleep in her pullups and hasn't asked to use the potty for a couple of nights. But, she still wants mama to come in a couple times at night to fix her blanket and give her a kiss. I think we're in the process of resetting the sleep patterns which always go awry after a bout of illness and/or hitting a major milestone like pottytraining. Since we've had both, it may take a while. Very much looking forward to the time change next month when the 5/530 wakeup time changes to the six o'clock hour. I'm having a hard time being a nice mommy at 5am. Poor Mark's been taking the brunt of my bad mood in the mornings. It is very frustrating because Ms L ONLY wants her mom when she wakes up.

Ms. Elsa running up and down the sidewalk. One thing that I love best about Elsa is her quirky sense of humor. She makes lots of jokes usually involving animals. She also does imitations. Lately, if we ask her what she believes to be an obvious question, she'll use this special voice that sounds a bit like Eeyore. Oooo-kay, maaa-aam. The first few times she did it, Mark and I cracked up because she was clearly making fun of us. She'll do the same thing to her sister, when Lily gets into tantrum mode.

Since her sister has been getting the bulk of parental attention lately. Elsa really cherishes her dates. On the weekends, we often take the girls out individually. Elsa just loves it. She just beams when it is her turn to go the grocery store. She's such a good helper. She'll sit in the car, chattering away and give me lots of advice about what to buy. She could stay out all day.

Stomping in some puddles. The girls are getting really interested in the natural world. They are completely perplexed by the disappearance of the snow. Where did it go? Why are their puddles? They also ask me lots of questions about day and night. Where's the sun? Make it come back? Why is it dark? How come they can only see the moon sometimes? Budding young scientists.

Pretty picture of Lily.
The other cool thing they've been doing lately is memorizing rhymes. They can recite some nursery rhymes by heart like "hey diddle." It is really cool. They can "read" us Goodnight Moon and get the words right. I often find the girls sitting with a book, reciting the story while moving their fingers over the words.

I've noticed their taste in books has become more sophisticated. They like books with lots of words. This week, I finally let them check out library books and they picked out Dr Seuss and the original Berenstein Bears. Their at home favorites are currently any of the Clifford series. They have a bunch and will read them over and over again.

Elsa's making her imp face.
Their writing and drawing skills are changing, too. All of the sudden, they are getting pretty good at staying in the lines of their coloring books. And Elsa, especially, has been practicing making letters. I kept noticing that that someone had been putting letter-like drawings inside my unfinished crossword puzzle squares. (Mark and I are on a crossword kick). Turns out that Elsa has been pretending to write. She makes these tiny scribbles that kind of look like letters. Today they both insisted on writing their own grocery list before we went to the store.

This is when they realized that stomping in mud puddles makes their pants wet. They started crying because they were dirty. L and E really hate to be dirty. Ironic since they are so good at making messes. But, they do like to clean. Sometimes, I think they make messes, just so they can "clean" them up. Yesterday, they both took sponges and helped me clean the bathroom.

Sledding

The girls are back. We've been out of communication while suffering through a plague of near constant illness for the past 10 days. We've all had colds. Then, Elsa developed a rash, earache and conjunctivitis. Poor Lily then developed some sort of flu that gave her fever spikes of 104.5 degrees for 3 days, then a couple more days of mild fever. Very scary. The only time we ventured out during this time was for doctors visits and trips to drugstore. Not a fun last week. Now, it seems the girls are on the mend. They both still have a little conjunctivitis that we're treating with prescription eyedrops. But, we've been fever-free for 3 days.

On the bright side: Lily daytime potty trained herself over the course of the past week. She's been accident free for 4 days! That girl has some of the most amazing willpower and stubbornness that I've ever seen. The kid just basically decided she wasn't wearing diapers anymore and that was that. Still working on the overnights. But, hopefully, we will make some progress. Feeling very tired as she's been screaming for the potty every two hours all night long. (but we're usually too late). I'm trying to convince her it is still ok to wear a diaper/pullups at night. Last night, I got her to finally wear pullups to sleep. But, she still woke herself up everytime she wet. Need to work on a creative solution.

Here's some pictures of us sledding across the front lawn today. Elsa's wearing purple, Lily's in pink.

Superbowl Party

Last night we celebrated our midwestern heritage with a little superbowl party. My family is from Da Bears territory and Mark's the Colts, so we had a little extra reason to get excited this year. Mark enticed his European buddies to come over with promises of America's finest Macrobrews and fatty foods. It was pretty fun. Lily and Elsa had a blast being the big cheeses with the other little kids there 6 wks, 9 months and 19 months. And it was more relaxing for me to have them run wild in our own home. Usually, university parties tend to be wine and cheese affairs and I'm so worried about the girls breaking something or making a huge mess. Instead, they had a blast eating three servings of icecream and running around the house until 10pm. And the best part is that they slept in this morning until 8am!

Elsa caught a snowflake

Please excuse the messy postings. Mark and I have been experimenting with Flickr. I think it will be a much easier way to store/upload/print our pictures. Our old fashioned FTP method is quite cumbersome. But, I'm just getting the hang of this. For those in the know, how can you include multiple pictures when you try and blog directly from Flickr. My senior technical adviser is at work right now.

As you can see, the girls have been enjoying some of our recent snow. Finally it looks and feels like winter. Elsa caught a snowflake on her tongue. And we were able to build a little snowman together. The girls really love snowmen.

Over the weekend, the girls caught their first stomach bug. They took turns puking Friday night (Elsa) and Sunday night (Lily). I thought everyone was better until Lily suddenly spiked a 101 degree (armpit temperature) fever on Monday. It scared me. The girls have never really been sick before aside from some sniffles. Lily seems to be recovering. This morning she finally got her appetite back and demanded chicken nuggets at 6AM. Now we're hoping that sleep gets back to normal. They've been waking up before 5am all week and taking big naps mid-day. Mom and Dad are a little worn out.

In happy news, we got into our first choice preschool. The girls begin at the University League Preschool in September. It just so happens that our new playgroup originally started as a meeting place for younger siblings at the school. Something to do while their big brothers and sisters are at school. So, we've had the chance to meet a lot of their future classmates. I've even met a couple of kids born in September 04, so they won't be the only young ones in their class. The school is a cooperative, meaning the parents actually "work" there a couple days per month. I'm really excited about meeting the other moms and dads. It seems like a nice community. The girls will be going 5 mornings a week with the possibility of adding lunches or full-days. So, this will give me some good options for possibly getting a part-time job. That would be my ideal situation. So fingers crossed, it will all work out. I've been slowly applying for work this Winter and haven't heard back from anybody. Maybe the timing would work better in the Fall. Childcare vs finding a job is a real chicken/egg issue. Which do you find first?
