End of Fall frolic

Happiness is jumping into a freshly raked pile of leaves. Last night a windstorm knocked down the stragglers of this season's leaves. When the girls got home from school today, the maintenance crew left a giant pile of leaves sitting in front of our house. The girls had a blast. Life is good.

Thanksgiving 2007

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Hope everyone had a great holiday. We ended up having a sweet little Thanksgiving, just the 4 of us. The girls were great cooks and helped me make cornbread, cranberries and mashed potatoes. It is so fun to do kitchen projects with two little helpers.

Mark, Lily and the bird. I annoy Mark by making him take a picture with his turkey every year. He did a great job. It was a lot of turkey for 4 people. We have lots and lots of leftovers.

Elsa got a drumstick. Doesn't she look thrilled. She took about 2 bites and was finished. So, Mark ate the rest of it.

The girls levitating a ball with mind control. We had balmy weather for most of the day. I think we must have hit 70. Then, we had a huge wind and rain storm last night. Today, we had a high of 40. 30 degree temperature change in one day. Crazy.

The girls wore their "Probably Politically Incorrect Native American" headdresses for the holiday. They made these for the Thanksgiving Feast at Preschool. The 3 year olds were the Indians and the 4 year olds were the Pilgrims. All the classes made various foods which they shared at a big party. They also have spent the past few weeks making/decorating tablecloths, placemats and centerpieces. I was lucky enough to help serve the meal. And the kids were absolutely adorable. Since I try not to post pictures of other people's kids on the Internet without permission, I cannot provide photograpahic evidence. But, they had a really great time.

Two little turkeys

Lily chose a more traditional path with hers.

Lots of things to report. We've entered the crunch season for Mark's work. End of the semester fun + one talk in Boston + the big annual conference in SF all before Xmas makes for a busy Panning household.

Just to up the ante a bit, I started a part-time job this week at the Princeton Public Library in Lending Services. It is fun to get back to my roots as I worked in libraries during high school and college. Plus, libraries are a very orderly and quiet place to be when you're dealing with 3-year old twins as your primary work. Princeton has one of the most fabulous public libraries that I've ever seen. It is a new building they designed everything to be really cozy and user friendly. Nice lighting, couches, fireplaces and you can even buy coffee. My coworkers are really nice and they seem flexible about my hours in order to accommodate Mark's travel schedule. We've managed to keep home, preschool and both places of employment all in walking distance of each other. So it makes it a bit easier to trade pickups, drop-offs and childcare.

The girls are fabulous and fun as usual. Right now, they're getting along with each other really well. (Got to appreciate these good times!) They've been playing a lot. They make up really elaborate games. They like to make up stories about how they're visiting each other's apartments or going to see their cousins or going to school. They've named the squirrels in our front yard Dinky and YoYo and make up stories about them, too. They're getting really good at recognizing their letters and numbers. They'll see a circle and shout "That's an O" or a stick will look like a "7" to them. They like to play rhyming games and have been asking me to point out words in books. So, I think they're beginning to figure out that letters make certain sounds. Phonics 101. It is fun to watch them figure things out.

Dance recital

The girls are going through a dance phase. They've been trying to replicate the ballet scenes from Disney's The Little Einsteins. We can hear them singing "Arabesque . . . arabesque" and fluttering around the floor. As luck would happen, Great-Grandma A just sent a box of goodies including two dance leotards. And then yesterday, their preschool teacher sent them home with a pair of tap shoes which had been donated to their school's dress-up collection, but were too small for anybody but our girls. Fun! Although, I'm not sure what our adjoining neighbors think of tap dancing twins on hardwood floors! This morning, Lily ran into our bedroom at 7am asking to put on her tutu.

Elsa is wearing pink and Lily's in blue.

Elsa cracks me up. Lily tends to just run back and forth while dancing, but Elsa actually concentrates on her form. She tries to make it look like ballet.

Lily said the cutest thing last week. She was carrying a big box of toys up the steps and said, "Elsa please help me. I need 3 hands." I thought it was a cute way to ask for help.

Happy sisters.

This picture is a little blurry, but I like it because you can see Elsa's "proud
expression. We've been seeing it a lot lately. She's been really working on being more independent and doesn't like help doing things like getting dressed or using the bathroom. Over the weekend, we rearranged their bedroom so they can now reach all their clothes. They really like being big kids.

Last Monday, the girls had their 3-year checkups. At 37.5 months, the girls were both 27 lbs and 35.5 inches tall. This puts them at the 9th percentile. The girls have been keeping on their growth curve which is good and actually gained a bit from last year. They seem to be very healthy and active and developing quite normally.

That same day, Mark also met with their teachers for their first parent/teacher conference. I couldn't go because the girls were both sick last week. He reported lots and lots of good things. The teacher's said the girls are doing amazing, especially considering they are the youngest in the class. Some of the kids are almost a year older than them, but they are keeping up quite nicely. As I've noted on my helping parent days, the girls attention span is getting so much better especially in circle time. The teachers said the girls are always willing to join in and try new things. They are very impressed with how well they play with others and share. They noted the only time the girls get cross is with each other. And they've made it a policy to keep them separated at snacktime, field trips, etc. They noted that Lily tends to be a bit more outgoing and really really likes to paint. But, Elsa tends to have an easier time being independent and separating from us at drop-off. One of the nicest compliments they received is about how joyful and happy they always seem to be and that they are never mean spirited. The teachers mentioned that Lily, Elsa and their buddy Lucy have formed a sunny little trio. They did note that while the girls' language skills are excellent as far as grammar and vocabulary, we need to focus more on pronunciation. They are having a bit of trouble with their initial consonants like p-oliet for toilet and z-uice for juice. This is typical for their age, but we should keep an eye on it. We mentioned this to their doctor and he said as long as WE can understand most of what they say and HE can understand at least half of what they say, he's not worried. Both the teacher and doctor also mentioned using scissors as a 3-year milestone. So, the girls each have a new pair of safety scissors for practicing. They like them very much. On another random note, the girls also got their first boardgame last week. I bought them "Candyland" and they think it is the best thing ever. They understand the concept, but sometimes have a little trouble knowing which direction to move their gamepieces.

A happy trick-or-treater

IMG_1322
After missing the Halloween parade at school, Elsa was feeling much more cheerful and healthy for trick-or-treating. Yay! But, poor Lily overdid her Halloween festivities at school and crashed out on the couch at 6pm. Then, she threw up. (must have been to much candy!) This was certainly a Halloween to remember. The girls ended up having very separate Halloween experiences. Here's hoping for better health next year!
